little by little

while i was twirling and whispering in a semi-stinky (kid feet) kindermusik room on a sunny saturday morning, ernie took the boys to the grand opening of the greatest park in the world where henry “was a little bit embarrassed” by dr. turner and his navy blue windy band.

after standing in a long line for free hot air balloon rides, the wind was too strong and the busy workers deflated the thing and our boys did not get to ride up in “the air balloon” as jude repeatedly remembers to me. they were sad and, although i do feel their disappointment, i’m secretly relieved. ernie says that i think he’s incompetent to parent two preschoolers in mid-air, i say that i’m incompetent to do so, as well. the idea of “getting a better look over the edge” for the last time terrifies me and is the stuff of motherly nightmares.

and while we’re dreaming, i’ll mention here in this once-weekly post of mine that henry has been having bad dreams each night. dreams that he finds slightly, nervously, ridiculous after talking through them in the bright of morning. dreams about mean boys from the park turning into ducks and being eaten by sea monsters and dreams about “skullens” (skull-n-crossbones) in the house, in the bed, under the bed are a bit easier to confront over breakfast. he is so scared of these dreams that he does not want to go do sleep at night. “what if i have bad dreams?” i almost hate to pray for sweet dreams with him, for sometimes bad dreams come anyway, whether we’ve begged against them or not. how do i teach such things to one so full of faith? we pray all the same, for good dreams and good sleep.

and on another subject entirely, although i must admit to having a few bad dreams about it lately, check out the new blog that i’m writing — poco a poco — for my new place of employment. if you’ve got wee ones, in particular, there should be something there for you.
