new, improving

we saw ratatouille (funny to hear jude use this word so easily, naturally) on friday afternoon. pixar does not disappoint. henry is already asking when we can buy the dvd. the boy behind us kept kicking jude’s chair. for what seemed like the duration. long, rhythmic kicking. it almost gave the movie 4-d quality. almost.

yesterday, near enough to july, we turned on the air conditioner. central air that sneaks into the house through old registers, vents. i had secretly been wanting to turn it on for several weeks, but being too proud to admit that i was melting and crabby due to the growing of wee babe, the swelter of backyard play, the horrible act of firing up the stove and pretending to cook, i waited for ernie to spend the morning ripping out carpet in his attic studio, the afternoon mowing grass and washing car, to have the air conditioning suggestion come from his lips instead of mine. it’s like having to win at monopoly. i think it comes from clayton who used to bare his teeth at us while collecting hotel money on park place. ernie laughs at me because he knew, my ability to be subtle sorely lacking in these kinds of matters. is it worse that he knew? there’s no turning back now, the pillows are cold on both sides, all night long. the wool rug in the living room no longer makes the room unliveable.
we plan for fireworks next week and i’m unsure. i don’t want to go hours and hours early with busy spinning children to get a good spot downtown for explosions and all that. it’s nice to keep things like this simple, but i’m boring that way. and tired! at nine-thirty, ten o’clock!
