annie had an art show (with art & light and teresa, who was wearing a good hat) in a secret garden last night. save for the mosquitos, it was the perfect place for it. i want one of those annie landscapes badly, and a secret garden with mossy stones and black dragonflies and headless statues of my own just as badly. i also wish that paintings like these could hang outside and not be ruined by rain and sun.
we went on a date last night, the first in a very long time. we need to make way for a date night now and again. included in the date were cute twin babysitters, cups of peach ice cream, snoops around an amazing little vine covered art packed cottage, fish tacos, coffees, and super loud sidewalk preachers. it was good, though my sons gave the twins a run for their money with their showing off and other naughty shenanigans.
this week we’re going swimming, buying peaches, buying sparklers, going to the post, going to the farmer’s market, picking basil, eating pesto, riding bikes, breaking up fights, playing basketball, folding laundry, employing the sprinkler, painting toes, taking a walk, picking lantana, and trying not to watch too many kid shows on netflix while the sun burns for the long afternoons.

early light, coffee, noisy kids, meander in garden, squash, pickles, weed to pinch, pull, wind, rain, fallen pine, chainsaws, figs on fig tree, vacuuming days of grass from floors and corners, pup on the couch, violin music for a bit, rain, smooth the blanket, straighten the rug, toys to rooms, games to boxes, laundry in one machine, another, into baskets, curry, tacos, steak father dinner, olives, to the garden again, to the church again, vbs for days, swimming, swimming again, sunshine, water over shoulders, ice cream late at night, ice cream for kids, basketball in driveway, walks with bicycling kid and pup, new plants in pots, candlelight, moonlight, no light, long sleeps by the fan, fuss at kids, yell at kids, read to kids, make stuff with kids, be with kids, forget how to speak to people that aren’t kids, days, nights, mornings, noons, birthdays, june away, july to come, summer going, going gone before too long. things are being done but something should be done. floundering a bit.
i forgot to blog about this oh happy day trip to paris that i hope to win…. did you enter? only a few moments left!
freckle moustache

this is the first year we’ve had friends with a pool who live close enough and with whom we feel comfortable enough to splash at their house a couple of times a week. as a result, my boys are on their way to being real swimmers, the house is a wreck from afternoon abandonment of daily chores, and i am growing a sad freckle moustache (if you freckle you will understand this. it’s terrible, freckles anywhere else are fine, even good. but on the upper lip? no. and those of you who insist i’m imagining such a thing, you are wrong, ever wrong. anyone with freckles have this problem? sad.). but the pool, the swimming, it is good. i love the water by day, the water at night, the graceful place the water takes you.
today is jude’s birthday. i have made cupcakes and fed him mac & cheese and let him watch a movie in the morning hours. and tonight we’re blazing the kitchen with a mascara melting 550 degree oven to make pizzas for him. all for love, i love him so.

hot here, there. we’re going swimming and maybe jam making with friends. today is a day to go to the library and sign up for the summer reading program. today is the day to eat the peas that were picked last night when the sun was hidden by storm clouds that didn’t rain for us after all.

are there poems written, anthems sung, to herald the first of june? june, the month of summer in your hands, hot summer pink on noses, shoulders. june, the month of hopes and dreams, the month of brides and beetles, flowers almost ready to pick and tuck behind an ear, inside a jar.
popsicles are new in june. sleeveless dresses. fans. long evenings. dirty feet. dirty fingers. the summer new and sitting tall. oh june, i’m a little taken with you.
