a very, very clean house
sun and pup frolicking together
grammy + granddad arrive. lola has her toenails painted
lasagna that does not run into a cheesy, saucy river
devil’s food cupcakes with chocolate ganache (thank you, mom. and thank you martha)
coffee in various forms
three fresh kids, clean, soap scented when i turn off the reading lights and do some tucking in

things i want, am content without, but sort of want all the same
a great espresso machine
the ability to deep fry things without making a huge oil mess

a red cardigan sweater, long, v-neck, you know, the boyfriend kind, but red
sandals + a pedicure
a long, slow trip to ikea for cheap little tables + orb lights + unlisted purchases
chocolate making skills, like, really good skills
a lush garden
about 100 more days of clear skies + 65 degree weather

things i’m thinking of, both good….
kent ambler in real life, friday night at art & light
this very young girl who gave much to love others
buying mass amounts of organizational containers
everything necessary for making an amazing garden
cleaning the fridge + filling it with cheese
wishing to listen to shakespeare while working
& really just not good at all
this poor child who was killed because her parents took horrible parenting advice way too far
bewitched, entranced, fascinated

spring in secret
those daffodils, they’re coming
a purple crocus
beach thoughts
the garden, tilled and black
jude in shorts and bare feet for a bit, despite the bluster
bluster in the wind
burning leaf smells in neighborhoods
windows popped open here, there, for a moment
wind in the willows lines popping into the head
soups losing their potency
shunning of jackets
snow, a days ago dream
a grand smile

good
homemade pasta made with the new pasta machine i’ve coveted for a wee while
toasted pecans everywhere
long walks with max, quiet all around
toys played with in ways unexpected (as pictured above)
a day good for being outside
magazines in the mail
packages to the post
customs forms tidily placed on envelopes
ice cream, readily available
not very good
eating too much superbowl party food. ugh.
making dinner while every hungry person and creature is in the kitchen, waiting
traffic around three p.m.
the sound of a kid falling down the stairs (very bad, this)
dime store not having supplies i need
dropping contents of purse on pavement. twice.
washing rooms in light

taking max out. over and again.

busy about
dwelling long on garden preparations
ordering various seed catalogs
endless barrage of ignorant emails to gardener relative
coffee in the yard while the young ones hoot
unsubscribing from and deleting terrible amounts of email from my inbox (nearly 10,000 unread. seriously.)
washing all laundry then folding none of it
catching up on orders
watching homemade falafel just crumble into nothing in the deep vat of oil
stopping! immediately! any more prune giving by big daddy to lola
school, and all of the protestations
wishing for time to sew
listening to the new neighbor dogs bark
spying on the new neighbor without wearing my glasses (is that fluffy white hair or a hat?)
trying hard not to turn this blog into a blog of puppy photos
month of empty pockets

hearing january
slosh in the tea kettle right before it whistles
max running back, forth
mildly annoying “computer” lola got for christmas (grammy!) that sings and barks most of the day
pages of henry’s books being turned as he reads in bed before sleep
scraping pepper grinder at dinner
someone shouting so big daddy can hear them
bells on the door
clothes thump spinning in the dryer
coins collected on the wii
jude’s mouth, constantly
legos being rummaged through
music at all volumes, in several rooms, at once
